Whole home energy assessments with Carrier360.
This just in: Carrier Corp a subsidiary of the UTC corporation is the industry leader in heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions. The company just released it’s Carrier360 program for whole home energy assessments. Rather than addressing the home in terms of the mechanicals only, Carrier is directing it’s distributors and vendors to look at the whole home as it relates to the mechanicals by way of the Carrier360 Home Performance test.
There are probably two questions you are asking yourself:
- What is a Carrier360 ?
- Why is the world leader in heating and cooling solutions concerning its self with energy assessments?
Well I hope we can give some keener insight into the Heating and Cooling mega giant’s expansion into energy assessments, and how it can benefit you – the homeowner.
First, What is an energy assessment? Well, what we refer to as an “energy assessment” should really be referred to as a “Home Performance Analysis”. Home Performance contracting is a philosophy and a science based on the premise that homes should be safe, healthy, comfortable, durable, and efficient. Through a series of testing in the home – your analysis, an accredited energy assessor can detect deficiencies in the home’s structure, mechanics, energy consumption, indoor air quality and safety! The testing not only gives the homeowner insight into how they can conserve energy, but also how they can increase their comfort and the health of their overall indoor environment. Carrier Corp has named this Analysis a Carrier360.
Why is this important to you?
Well, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) The Environmental Protection Agency lists poor indoor air quality as the fourth largest environmental threat to our country! According to the American Lung Association, pollutants such as: Combustion gas, Biological, Radon, Asbestos and Formaldyhyde all derive from problems or failures that occur in our homes, such as: musty odors and mold growth, window condensation, structural rot, peeling paint, back-drafting appliances, damp basements and ice dams, or build-up of ice on the roofs edge, and inadequate ventilation can cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer, and chronic lung diseases such as asthma. In addition, it can cause headaches, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea and fatigue. Everyone of these potential hazards are not only found, but diagnosed during your home’s Performance Analysis- your Carrier360.
Carrier Corp realized, far ahead of the curve, that a healthy and sustainable indoor environment takes into consideration more than just the heating and cooling equipment! To truly deliver comfort and efficiency a heating and cooling contractor has to not only repair the symptom but must also diagnose the cause, and a lot of times that cause does not involve the equipment itself.
One of the many examples of problems diagnosed during the Carrier 360 is: a homeowner that is getting condensation on the inside of their windows. During the initial homeowner interview, the homeowner informs the Energy Expert performing the Carrier360 that in the winter when she turns the humidifier up the windows collect moisture on the inside! The home is only two years old and the windows are the same age. Initially the homeowner thinks that it’s an issue with the humidifier on the furnace, but in reality it is a ventilation issue within the house. According the The Building Performance Institute, a home that has less than .25 (25% of it’s total indoor air volume) exchanging with the outside air every hour is at risk for sick building syndrome (SBS). SBS is caused by not having enough fresh air entering into a building, and in-turn may contribute to mold growth and over exposure to indoor air contaminants each of which may lead to serious health risks. Basically the homeowner’s house is too tight. Lucky for you, all this is diagnosed and reported during your Carrier360! Your Energy Expert will explain this potential risk thoroughly with complete recommendations for remediation.
So, thanks to Carrier’s insight and forward thinking there are now heating and cooling contractors out there that are being backed by their manufacturer which truly have your family’s best interest in mind when they say, “Sure – we can fix it”.
